Crossroads and Unraveling

UnWholly

By Neal Shusterman

In the book, UnWholly, the author focuses on three main characters, Connor, Lev, and Risa. During their time, kids under 18 had a chance of being unwind. Unwind is a process when the government takes their body parts and implant them into a handicapped person so that patient could live healthy again. The patients benefit from unwinding but to kids, it's death, literally. Connor, Lev, and Risa are all AWOL kids. AWOL basically means that they were supposed to be unwinded but they ran away before they could be held in custody. They aren't the only ones who ran from unwinding. Hundreds of kids in the US were AWOL. In the book, they start out in separate places.
Connor leads a secret civilization of AWOLs in an abandoned airplane junkyard, called the Graveyard. Lev is still on the streets scouring for desperate resources. Risa has been abducted by juvy polices. Connor has a personality of heroism, and ascendency. Lev is more to the impulsive side. Risa is open-minded but cautious at the same time.
After months and months of leading the Graveyard, Connor is being assaulted by the police. In order to protect the AWOLs from being abducted, Connor utilizes his heroism and ascendency skills to construct a small strike force that'll give the AWOLs time to run from captivity. Lev is on the outskirts of the battle to find Connor and rescue him from being captured. When he finds Connor, he tranquilizes him and carries him away from the action. He does this all in one snap, not giving one moment to think. Risa was captured to become friends with a organism that was constructed by parts from kids. To escape the nightmare, Risa manages to speak out to the world to prove what they are doing is wrong and manages to break away from the bonds she's been held to.
In the end, Connor and Lev was aided by real people who believe that kids have another choice than being unwinded. There's always somebody out there for you.
